Glycolic acid: the smallest of the alpha-hydroxy acids. Its low molecular weight promotes its absorption into the stratum corneum. Its activity is linked to its ability to reduce corneocyte cohesion. The exfoliation of the superficial layer of the epidermis and the resulting increase in cell turnover leads to increased fibroblast activity and the production of collagen and elastin. By removing the superficial stratum corneum and the keratin plugs that clog pores, a new layer of skin emerges that is more vital in terms of moisture supply (alpha-hydroxy acids have moisturizing properties) and contains more collagen and elastin.
Salicylic acid: beta-hydroxy acid with keratolytic properties. It is often used to remove keratin deposits. In cosmetics, it is used in low concentrations as a functional exfoliant to remove superficial layers of skin, with a smoothing and brightening effect.
